Brazil had the ninth highest GDP in the world worth about $1.8 trillion accounting for 2.4% in 73 trillion global GDP. Brazil is the fifth most populated country in the world with a population 208 million that accounts for 2.8% of the global population in 2015. For the last two decades, Brazil had relative political stability and that has generated a positive effect on the country's economic development.

Brazil has been facing problems regarding waste water management due to inefficient and medieval approach towards sewage treatment. Only 40% of the sewage generated is treated by approximately 2800 sewage treatment plants. The major drivers for the depriving situation is poor connectivity of sewage with households, poor water distribution and sanitation facilities, industrial growth etc. This area would be of interest to environmental consultancy firms as many treatment plants can be set up to improve the conditions in Brazil.

Brazil accounts for about twothirds of the Amazon rainforest and has experienced deforestation of 29% between August 2015 and July 2016 over the previous year. This is a result of weak government regulations, construction of roads, dams and other infrastructure projects and a slowing economy.

In December 2016, Brazil announced plans of restoring 12 million hectares of degraded and deforested land at the 13th Conference of the Parties on Biological Diversity COP13. The main reasons for deforestation in the Amazon rainforest include logging, mining, ranching and increasing human settlements. In the year 2016, Brazil signed the Paris Agreement and committed to reduce the emission levels to 37% below 2005 levels by 2025 and 43%by 2030. The environmental consultancy firms can provide services to help achieve the targets set for the year 2030.

Major industries utilizing environmental consulting services in Brazil include petroleum, mining, cement manufacture and chemicals production.
