Powering Precision Health 2017 To Kick Off With A Mission To Eradicate Disease

World News: . []

The nation’s first precision health summit designed to be the premiere forum for world-leading medical experts to unveil breakthrough medical research and collaborate on innovative treatments is set to convene in Boston next month. The Powering Precision Health Summit 2017 (PPHS) will be held on Oct. 24th and 25th at the historic Charles Hotel in Harvard Square.

“Optimism for precision health is abounding, with unprecedented digital detection innovations and groundbreaking therapies that are poised to transform medicine from today’s reactive sick care, to proactive and preventative healthcare,” said Kevin Hrusovsky, Founder and Chairman of the Powering Precision Health Summit. “PPHS is a big-stage platform from which top medical researchers and innovators can explore and collaborate on understanding the molecular structure of disease triggers, spawning a new frontier in medicine that spans the entire continuum from health to disease.”

Powering Precision Health 2017 will focus on two of the most destructive and problematic disease categories—neurology and oncology—and will also feature deep dives into metabolic disease, including cardiac disease, infectious disease and inflammation. The powerhouse speaker line-up will present their latest progress on traumatic brain injury, concussions, Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), Alzheimer’s, ALS, early detection and diagnosis of multiple cancer types, liquid biopsy, diabetes, cardiovascular health monitoring, exposing hidden HIV, and digitizing the immune system for the first time.

“Precision health is focused on finding a cure for Alzheimer’s, CTE and other neurological diseases,” explained Dr. Ann McKee, M.D., Professor of Neurology & Pathology, Boston University Medical School, and featured speaker at Powering Precision Health 2017. “I’m delighted to participate in the summit and very optimistic that we will soon find a way to diagnose CTE in living humans using biomarkers, and ultimately a cure for these devastating diseases. The groundswell of research in these diseases is truly inspiring.”

“Precision detection technologies allow us to identify even the deadliest diseases, like pancreatic cancer, in the very early stages, which allows for precision treatment and better overall prognosis for the patient,” said Raghu Kalluri, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chairman, Cancer Biology and Director of the Metastasis Research Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Kalluri will present the oncology keynote at PPHS.

In addition to top medical experts, several prominent former NFL players, including Chris Borland, will take the stage to discuss the importance of CTE and neurodegenerative disease research. They’ll be joined by patient advocates, including Nancy Frates, mother of Pete Frates, who will share her family’s quest to find a cure for ALS and the role of the Ice Bucket Challenge, and Rebecca Carpenter, daughter of former Green Bay Packers Running Back and Coach Lew Carpenter, and director of the award-winning documentary film about CTE, Requiem for a Running Back, coming to theaters November 2017.

“I am honored to speak at Powering Precision Health and thank Kevin for advancing scientific research with this summit,” said Frates. “It gives me great hope that medical discoveries will be made to slow the progression of ALS and eventually develop a much-needed cure.”

Powering Precision Health 2017 will include speakers such as:

  • Ann McKee, M.D., Professor of Neurology and Pathology, Boston University. Chief Neuropathologist for the National VA ALS Brain Bank. Director at the Neuropathology Service for the New England Veterans Administration Medical Centers (VISN-1).
  • Nancy Frates, ALS Advocate and Co-Founder of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. TED Speaker. Mother of Pete Frates, former Captain, Boston College baseball team diagnosed with ALS at 27.
  • Rudy Tanzi, Ph.D., Vice-Chair of Neurology and Director of the Genetics and Aging Research Unit at Massachusetts General Hospital. Joseph P. and Rose F. Kennedy Professor of Neurology at Harvard Medical School. Advancing Alzheimer’s research and molecular testing.
  • Jessica M. Gill, Ph.D., RN, National Institutes of Health (NIH), Lasker Clinical Research Scholar at Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine, NIH. Detecting concussions non-invasively and predicting when athletes can safely return to play.
  • Robert Stern, Ph.D., Professor of Neurology, Neurosurgery, and Anatomy and Neurobiology at Boston University School of Medicine. Director of Clinical Core, BU Alzheimer’s Disease Center. Director of Clinical Research for the BU Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) Center.
  • Gordon J. Freeman, Ph.D., Adjunct, Department of Immunology and Virology, Professor, Department of Medical Oncology, Professor of Medicine, Harvard Medical School. Discovered PD-1 pathway blockade for cancer immunotherapy.
  • David Walt, Ph.D., Department of Pathology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH). Core Faculty, Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering at Harvard University. Breast cancer detection advances using non-invasive biomarkers.
  • Raghu Kalluri, M.D., Ph.D., Professor and Chairman Cancer Biology and Director of the Metastasis Research Center, MD Anderson Cancer Center.
  • Alfred Sandrock, M.D., Ph.D., Executive Vice President and Chief Medical Officer at Biogen.
  • David Rimm, M.D., Ph.D., Professor in the Departments of Pathology and Medicine (Oncology) at the Yale University School of Medicine. Director of Yale Pathology Tissue Services.
  • Henrik Zetterberg, M.D., Ph.D., Professor of Neurochemistry, University of Gothenburg, and University College in London.
