Mux Announces Early Access to Mux Video

World News: . []

Mux, Inc., a video infrastructure company founded by online video veterans, today announced Mux Video, a simple API to powerful video streaming. This month, Mux is opening up Mux Video to developers who are interested in early access, in preparation for a general release in early 2018.

“We built Mux Video to make it easier to build great online video experiences,” said Jon Dahl, co-founder and CEO of Mux. “Developers want a simple API that lets them stream video to any device, at high quality, at scale. For the first time, Mux Video will make this possible.”

Online video traffic is set to quadruple by 2020, but working with video has gotten harder, not easier, over the last 7 years. It takes a video expert to stream video well, and a team of experts are needed to actually innovate.

Mux Video makes scalable video streaming as easy as turning on water: POST a video; GET back a video that plays well on any device in just seconds. Decisions like bitrate selection and CDN routing are driven by data, for better quality, reliability, and speed. Built by video experts and designed for developers, Mux Video allows teams of all sizes to get up and running in minutes.

Mux Video is created by the founders of Zencoder, the creators of Video.js, and the organizers of Demuxed. The Mux team includes video experts from companies like YouTube, Twitch, Facebook, and Brightcove.

POWERED BY DATA

Mux Video is the second product built by Mux. In 2016, Mux launched Mux Data, a video analytics product that measures streaming video performance for hundreds of millions of streams each month. Major video publishers like PBS, New York Times, Wistia, IGN, and Funny or Die rely on Mux Data to monitor their video Quality of Experience (QoE) and Quality of Service (QoS) and to reduce errors, rebuffering, low-quality, and slow load times.

This data is what makes Mux Video possible. Decisions within Mux Video, like bitrate selection and CDN routing, are powered by data. The result is better quality, faster publishing, and lower costs.

WHY THIS MATTERS

Streaming online video is too hard. Adding a single video on a website is significantly more challenging than adding images, and it takes specialized expertise to build a site that streams video at scale. Video is the most resource-intensive use of the internet (storage, bandwidth, compute), and technology changes quickly and it is expensive to keep up. When problems happen, publishers are often in the dark.

But performance matters. When streaming video fails or looks bad, users go elsewhere and publishers suffer. Meanwhile, the two or three biggest online video publishers have hundreds of engineers working on their video platforms, and have established a high bar for quality of experience. Other content providers don’t have the resources to meet customer expectations for broadcast quality streaming.

“Video is a huge market and growing quickly. Beyond media companies, it’s the emerging force in communication apps, online learning, ecommerce, and more,” said Dan Levine, Partner at Accel and investor in Mux. “Mux Video makes video ‘just work’ for developers by abstracting away the complexity of transcoding, delivery, etc., so developers can focus on building a business.”

To compete for online viewers, video publishers must deliver consistently high-quality experiences – and they need better tools to do it. These are the problems that Mux Video and Mux Data were built to solve.
