Toronto, Sept. 14, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Energetic volunteers are tackling plastic pollution as the Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup celebrates its 25th season on International Coastal Cleanup Day, Saturday, Sept. 15, with events across the country, including at Cherry Beach Park in Toronto.
The Shoreline Cleanup program, a partnership of Ocean Wise® and World Wildlife Fund Canada, is Canada’s largest volunteer-powered conservation program. Over the last quarter century, Shoreline Cleanup participants have cleaned almost 34,000 kilometres of shoreline and picked up more than 1.2 million kilograms of litter, preventing it from entering the water where it can harm wildlife and break up into microplastics and enter the food stream.
Other events are planned for Halifax, Ottawa and Vancouver.
Shoreline Cleanup is grateful for the support of its sponsors, including Loblaw Companies Limited and Coca-Cola Ltd. as the presenting sponsors and OLG as a provincial sponsor.
The Great Canadian Shoreline Cleanup, presented by Loblaw Companies Limited and Coca Cola, is one of the largest direct-action conservation programs in Canada. A conservation initiative of Ocean Wise and WWF-Canada, the Shoreline Cleanup aims to promote understanding of shoreline litter issues by engaging Canadians to rehabilitate shoreline areas through cleanups. www.ShorelineCleanup.ca
