Carnegie Learning’s EMC School Language Arts Curriculum Unanimously Approved by Texas State Board of Education

Carnegie Learning’s EMC School (EMC) division, a leading provider of digital and blended literacy solutions, today announced that the Texas State Board of Education unanimously approved Texas Mirrors and Windows for the 2019 language arts state adoption for grades 6-8, giving middle school educators statewide the opportunity to review the program for implementation starting in the 2019-2020 school year.

Texas Mirrors and Windows by EMC School reflects the vision for literacy in the new Texas state standards (TEKS), which call for authentic reading and writing inspired by contemporary, diverse, and traditional texts. After a review by the Texas review panel, the program was found to be 100% aligned to the new TEKS and to the English Language Proficiency standards for English Learners. Through an exclusive, evidence-based Gradual Release of Responsibility approach, Texas Mirrors and Windows develops middle school students’ independence with comprehension of complex texts required for success in high school, college, and the workforce. Text-dependent questions develop critical thinking skills, while mentor texts model effective strategies for student writers to hone their skills.

Knowing that today’s middle school students must be prepared to communicate using 21st century technology, Mirrors and Windows is delivered on the exclusive Passport platform, an immersive, personalized environment that engages students in collaborative literacy learning. Using Passport, students may respond to texts in new and creative ways, such as through online video discussions using FlipGrid. Multi-media annotation capabilities and social media sharing enable students to build meaning collaboratively, online or offline. Online novels and leveled libraries provide rich resources for self-selected, independent reading. Passport gives teachers tools for easily differentiating instruction and monitoring students’ progress with formative assessment data.

Texas Mirrors and Windows provides flexible options to accommodate the diverse needs of Texas classrooms, with hardcover print student editions, consumable worktexts, classroom libraries—including EMC’s ACCESS Editions that make great literature accessible for all learners, both in print and online—and digital licenses that allow districts to customize a curriculum that best fits their instructional model.

“We’re very proud that the Texas State Board of Education has recognized both the quality of our ELA curriculum and its rigorous alignment to the standards,” said Barry Malkin, CEO of Carnegie Learning. “We’re committed to helping teachers cultivate strong cultures of collaborative, deeper learning and we look forward to partnering with Texas schools and districts to support their literacy efforts.”
