EDMONTON, Alberta, April 17, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Restaurants Canada congratulates Jason Kenney and the United Conservative Party on being elected to lead Alberta’s 30 legislature.

“We look forward to seeing this new government get down to work improving operational realities for restaurants across the province,” said Mark von Schellwitz, Restaurants Canada Vice President, Western Canada. “When foodservice businesses thrive, so do the communities they serve.”

Restaurants Canada shared 16 policy recommendations with Alberta’s four major parties on Jan. 14 in the hopes that they would be incorporated into all their platforms in the lead up to the provincial election.

More than 20 were ultimately made that would positively impact foodservice operations in five key areas where Restaurants Canada had called for solutions — including at least two positive promises from every major party. The vast majority of positive pledges came from the United Conservative Party.

“Our industry’s call for action was heard loud and clear,” said Shanna Munro, Restaurants Canada President and CEO. “We are encouraged by the policies that the UCP has proposed in response to our recommendations. They will certainly provide much needed relief for Alberta’s restaurateurs.”

According to a by Restaurants Canada, one in three foodservice businesses in Alberta might close their doors if the realities of running a restaurant in the province don’t improve.

Restaurants Canada looks forward to working with all newly elected members of Alberta’s Legislative Assembly, from all parties, to improve conditions for foodservice operators across the province.
