U.S. stocks turned lower in afternoon trading, with technology shares bearing the brunt of the selling in a market rattled by a barrage of trade-related headlines. The S&P 500 swung between gains and losses for much of the session before sinking back toward the 50-day moving average shortly after 3 p.m. Bulls took comfort from the Trump administration ending steel tariffs on Canada, while bears pointed to hardening rhetoric from China. The S&P 500 is down 0.7% this week.
