“Outstanding teachers continue to employ innovative techniques to create exceptional lab experiences with limited resources,” said Dr. Frazier Wilson, VP Shell Oil Company Foundation and Director Workforce Development and Diversity Outreach. “We believe it is important to foster creativity through hands-on experiences. The additional resources enable students to develop a problem-solving mindset that will lead to the energy solutions of the future. The Shell Science Lab Challenge is one of many efforts that supports future generations in becoming innovators and assists educators to foster excitement about science among students.”
“Having access to quality lab experiences that foster inspiration and creativity, and where students feel empowered to engage in problem-solving and critical-thinking activities and investigations is essential for student development in the 21 century,” said Dr. David Evans, NSTA Executive Director. “Yet, scarce funding, inadequate resources and equipment, and insufficient training, often limit teachers from being able to deliver the high-quality lab experiences their students deserve. The Shell Science Lab Challenge will not only provide teachers with the tools and resources necessary to strengthen their existing lab capabilities, but will also provide the professional development opportunities needed to support high-quality science teaching and learning.”
Judges will evaluate entries based on various criteria, including demonstrated science inquiry and innovation in the middle or high school classroom with limited laboratory equipment, materials, and resources; demonstrated impact and engagement with students and the school community; and demonstrated need for support to improve science laboratory experiences.
Up to 54 NSTA district finalists will be chosen and asked to make a 3-5 minute video displaying their current science lab facilities and provide an explanation of how winning equipment and resources would make a difference in their school. The judging panel will pick 18 NSTA district winners from these finalists, and then five national finalists will be chosen. From there, a grand prize winner will be selected.
All winners will receive science lab equipment, Shell cash grants, membership to the NSTA, and support to attend NSTA Conferences on Science Education. The grand prize winner and four national finalists will be honored at a special banquet and ceremony at, April 2-5, 2020.
